I used book 1 and 2 while teaching in China. The cartoon scenes demonstrating the vocabulary and situational usage were charming as well as excellent visual representation of the focus. There are conversation starters in the back along will wonderful grammar charts, maps, and other things to help the teacher and the student. I have worked in language schools, public schools, and universities all over the world--these books are good at least as supplements or for tutoring even if not being used in specific courses. The authors of 'Converastion Gambits' have taken a very 'lexical phrase' approach to conversation skills. Each unit is very simple, and gives a range of expressions for students to learn and memorise as lexical phrases.
Conversation In English For Nursery
The theory is that native speakers have huge stockpiles of such 'chunks' that we draw on. The skills covered include responding with sympathy, interrupting, expressing opinions, disagreeing, back channelling, and a huge range more. Each unit has a simple practice exercise, though this will need to be supplemented with other exercises for more extensive usage. I have found that students enjoy it and love the input. They also love using the new phrases. It is a great resource that works for a whole range of levels.
Conversation In English Practice
I wish it had audio. I'm a sort of advanced beginner, can understand some of the dialogues pretty well without looking at the English. It inspires you to look up words and grammar you don't know. They push you, but in a fun way.
I like the way they incorporate the idioms. Idioms are important and fun to know as a part of everyday life. I can read a lot of words on a page but no way can I spontaneously come up with dialogue, I freeze up and these will be helpful practice. 'Come up with, freeze up' there's some idioms right there. I asked a friend who only had one Spanish class to try these out.
