मुमताज महल ने अपनी मोहब्बत के चलते शाहजहाँ से निगाह किया था. मुमताज की सुंदरता को उनके जीवनभर में कई कवियों, लेखको ने अपनी कविताओ और लेख में निखारा है. शाहजहाँ अपने पुरे मुग़ल साम्राज्य की यात्रा मुमताज़ के साथ ही किया करते थे. शाहजहाँ को मुमताज़ पर इतना भरोसा हो गया था की उन्होंने मुमताज़ को शाही सील, मुहर उजाह के अधिकार भी दे रखे थे.
मुमताज़ ने बाद में बताया भी था की उन्हें कभी किसी प्रकार के राजनैतिक ताकत की कोई चाह थी ही नही. लेकिन फिर भी मुमताज़ पर महारानी नूर जहाँ का काफी प्रभाव पड़ा, मुमताज़ को हमेशा से ही मैदान में होने वाले हाथियों की लड़ाई बहोत पसंद थी. मुमताज़ को अपने साम्राज्य की साधारण महिलाओ से मिलना, उनके साथ खेलना और बाते करना भी काफी पसंद था इसीलिए कई बार भी आगरा के गार्डन में भी टहलने जाया करती थी. 10 से भी ज्यादा बार गर्भवती होने के बावजूद मुमताज़ शाहजहाँ के साथ यात्रा पर जाती थी. यात्रा पर जाते समय वह पुरे का भ्रमण करना पसंद करती थी, जिनमे उन्हें शाहजहाँ की सैन्य शक्ति को देखना काफी पसंद था. उन्हें कुल 14 बच्चे हुए थे, जिनमे से 7 जन्मपूर्व ही मर गये या किशोरावस्था में ही मारे गये.

मुमताज़ महल मृत्यु और ताज महल मुमताज़ महल / Mumtaz Mahal की मृत्यु 1631 में अपने चौदहवे बच्चे को जन्म देते समय हुई थी. मुमताज़ के शव को उस समय शाहजहाँ के चाचा दानियाल द्वारा तापी नदी के तट पर जैनाबाद गार्डन में दफनाया गया था. शाहजहाँ को इस बात से काफी दुःख हुआ था, इसका शाहजहाँ के दिल पर काफी परीणाम हुआ. परिणामस्वरूप उनकी मृत्यु के बाद शाहजहाँ एक वर्ष के लिये शोक मानते हुए एकांत में रहने के लिए चले गये.
उनके शव को दिसम्बर 1631 में निकला गया और सोने से बनी शवपेटी में आगरा के पीछे दफनाया गया. आगरा के ही पीछे यमुना नदी के तट पर एक छोटे घर में उनके शव को रखा गया था.
शाहजहाँ बुरहानपुर के पीछे ही अपने सैन्य दल के साथ रहने लगे थे. और वाही रहते हुए उन्होंने मुमताज़ की याद में एक विशाल महल बनाने की योजना बनाई. उनके सपने को साकार होने में पुरे 22 साल लगे, मुमताज़ की याद में बने उस महल को “ ” के नाम से जाना जाता है. तब से लेकर आज तक ताजमहल की मोहब्बत की निशानी माना जाता है. और दुनिया भर के लोग मुमताज़ की याद में शाहजहाँ द्वारा बनाये ताजमहल को देखने आते है.
